In the year 960 A.D, our Viking ancestors settled in an area of France now known as Normandy. After becoming members of the French “Companionage”, the “Normans” took ships to England with William the Conqueror where they helped defeat King Richard. In return for their royal service, our ancestors received a Knights wage of 1,500 acres of land. This was selected in the area of England known as Cambridgeshire. A large portion of this land was established as a vineyard where grapes were turned into wine. Several hundred years later, the land was sold and the family split into three clans. Having long embraced the Scottish, English and Welsh versions of the legendary King Arthur, the family created three versions or spellings of our name. One clan stayed in England and the other two moved to Scotland and Wales. Legend has it that the family split to prevent the discovery of a secret treasure and although there is little documentation to support this, two versions of the family name does means “Protector” or “Guardian” and the third means “Keeper of the Secret.” Now, one can only speculate whether or not the legend is true and if there really is a secret treasure. Wine Keepers at LEGENDS Vineyard & WINERY feel that once you’ve tasted our wine, you will discover that the real secret is inside the bottle. |
